Woody NEVER Fixed Buzz Lightyear (and the Manual Proves It)

"It was filed under 'Lightyear.'"

Lotso cannot argue Buzz out of his loyalty, so he has it edited instead. The Bookworm does not search for the instruction booklet, he walks to a shelf and returns with it, filed by product name inside a daycare. Before he reads a word of the instruction he reads out the section heading, and the heading is ████████████████████████ — the same part of the booklet that covers changing the batteries.

Printed under that heading is a switch with two named settings, and the manufacturer’s own wording for the deluded Space Ranger is ██████████████████████████████. Two minutes later a blank-faced Buzz walks out of the shadows and puts his own family in cells. The video reads the paragraph in full.

"Tell me I wasn't this deluded."

Four years on, our Buzz — fully self-aware — walks down an aisle of himself in Al’s Toy Barn and gets tied into a cardboard box by a unit that has never left the store. So he tries the one thing that ever worked on him: you’re not really a Space Ranger, you’re a toy, we’re all toys. The shelf unit hears every syllable and ████████████████████.

Then listen to what that unit calls him instead. Traitor. AWOL. Later, impostor. Across four films Chuckles and Lotso get called broke and Gabby Gabby calls herself defective, and the one word nobody ever once applies to a Buzz is ██████████. The video plays the whole exchange, including the second numbered code that ends it.

"That wasn't me, was it?"

During the escape the family finally gets Buzz alone. Barbie brings the manual, Hamm reads it, Rex holds the reset button too long, and Buzz reboots in Spanish — still hailing Star Command, still stranded on a strange planet, still demanding to know friend or foe. The reset restored a language pack, not a self, and the friends’ own verdict on the rest of the booklet is that that part is in Spanish.

What actually hands Buzz back to them arrives later, in the garbage truck, and it is ██████████████████████████████. It is the second time this franchise repairs him with an impact rather than a friend. It is also the same kind of object that, fifteen years earlier, was the only thing that ever answered him when he called Star Command — ██████████████ running a commercial.
