Stinky Pete is a CULT LEADER (and Toy Story 3 Proved Him Right)

It's one of the most persuasive villain monologues Pixar ever wrote, and not a single word of it survives a check against the calendar.
"Two words: Sputnik. Once the astronauts went up, children only wanted to play with space toys."
The launch he blames — ███████ — was an ██████████████████ with no crew, no astronauts; the first of those went up years later. So if the show died from it in 1957 he's lying about the astronauts, and if astronauts existed it survived years past the launch. Either way the founding myth of his cult is a fabrication. He lies about history. Now look at the one claim his entire authority rests on — the claim about himself.
"He's mint in the box, never been opened."
That status makes him the untouched prophet, pure where the common toys are corrupted. But he climbs out to frame Jessie, brawls with Woody, seals an air vent — then reseats himself perfectly. A real mint toy is wired to its backing and ██████████████. In collector's terms he was never mint; he was █████ the whole time, hiding in a box he was free to leave. Why he stayed is in the video.
He performs purity he doesn't have. What else did he hide — this time on the tape itself?
"Everybody okay?" — "The real treasures are your friends and family."
Pete tells Jessie her story was cut to black forever — heroism severed before the landing, hope killed. But fans isolated the background TV audio and heard the gang ███████████. The jump worked. The resolution exists. Pete simply made sure nobody watched the ██████, so the museum could feel like the only place their lives have meaning. The video plays the suppressed audio.
