The Prestige Hanged the RESCUER (and the Padlock Proves It!)

"What a way to kill someone."

That is a judge, in the first act, standing over a smashed water tank. A magician is demonstrating on screen how an escape tank is supposed to work, and the lock that comes with one is █████████████████████████████, so the hands in the water can free themselves and live. The film shows you the working version long before it shows you a body.

The night that matters, the tank under Angier's stage has no key at all. Backstage they scream for one that does not exist. The old engineer who built those rigs had already ████████████████████████████████████, which is the part you are meant to forget. Somebody took the saving part out on purpose, and the film draws that line in the calmest room in the movie. The video walks that courtroom demonstration beat by beat.

"It took courage to climb into that machine every night..."

Angier says that dying, in his own voice, over the last minutes of the film. He is not describing a risk he survived. He is describing a schedule in which ██████████████████████████████████████████████████, and he files the arrangement under bravery. Read it again and count what he is actually admitting to.

The engineer made Angier a promise about how that death would feel. Once the killer is gone, he takes the promise back in a single flat word, and the film never softens it again. Angier knew the terms the whole time: ████████████████████████████████████████████. The video plays the confession and the retraction back to back.

"...Lord Caldlow has purchased the bulk of the items."

The magician is dead. The accused is in a cell waiting for the rope. The dead man's workshop goes under the hammer, and one wealthy stranger takes nearly all of it. Not souvenirs. He buys █████████████████████████████████████, and now nobody will ever be permitted to examine any of it.

Then the buyer walks into the condemned man's cell and takes off the disguise, and the name underneath is one the court had already written into the dead column. He does not pretend to grieve. On his way out he ██████████████████████████████. The video lays out what he says in that cell, and what he says he has won.
