The mission's one irreversible choice happens in a single room, in under four minutes, made by the man the audience trusts most. Pull that room apart line by line. The case for his planet was never the data.
"Edmunds' data is better, but Dr. Mann is the one still transmitting."
Two worlds are left and there is fuel for one. Before Brand says a word in her own defense, the room has already conceded which world has the better numbers, and nobody disputes it. She argues the physics of why the other candidate should come out sterile, and Cooper never answers the physics. He falls back on the only asset his pick has and hers does not: ████████████████████████.
Weigh that against what a beacon certifies. It proves a transmitter still has power. It does not prove there is ground under it. One crew member says the obvious thing out loud, ██████████████████████, and the film moves on without it. The video walks that room line by line.

When the crew reaches the world that beacon was calling from, the readings behind it turn out to be manufactured. The detour costs a crewmate, a ship, and years nobody gets back.
